Not many players have donned the No. 70 jersey with the Falcons since “Big” Bob Whitfield made it his own between 1992-2003. In fact, only two have worn it after 2003 — Frank Omiyale in 2005 and 2006, and D’Anthony Batiste in 2007.
The sixth overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft — Texas A&M’s Jake Matthews — has a chance to find the same longevity and success as Whitfield did in the jersey as he’ll proudly wear the No. 70 shirt.
I figured I’d ask Whitfield on Twitter what he thought of Matthews wearing the number and it sounds like Big Bob has given Matthews his blessing.
@FalconsJAdams I can wear my old jerseys to the games now.
