Mike Mayock’s only mock draft of the offseason will come live on NFL Network next week, but the network’s analyst fielded a media conference call earlier this week and shared some of his rough-draft projections while discussing players in this year’s class.
The Mock Monitor almost unanimously pegs an offensive tackle for the Falcons at No. 6 and Mayock agrees with this. However, his pick is different from the player many analysts have mocked to the Falcons, Jake Matthews. Mayock thinks if the Falcons stay at their original draft position, they’ll take Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan.
“It seems like no matter how I cut this, when I look at it, (Lewan) ends up in Atlanta at six,” Mayock said Thursday. “That makes a ton of sense. If Atlanta trades up for (Jadeveon) Clowney, all bets are off.”
Lewan has maintained his spot at No. 3 on Mayock’s offfensive tackle rankings throughout the draft season, behind Greg Robinson and Jake Matthews. Mayock said Lewan is still ranked there currently, but he believes some teams might like Notre Dame tackle Zack Martin slightly better.
The popular pick for the Falcons has been Matthews, but in Mayock’s scenario, the Texas A&M tackle won’t be available for the Falcons.
“I think Robinson and Matthews will go earlier,” he said. “Atlanta, who desperately needs either an edge rusher on defense or a tackle on offense, would then take him at six.”
