Offensive linemen don’t have highlights. In the blue-collar world along the trenches, you either did your job or you didn’t. But there are times, if you do your job well enough, you’ll get noticed.
Newly-signed guard Jon Asamoah has a reputation for being underrated, physical and consistent and I’ve found a GIF and a corresponding stat that points to that. Asamoah isn’t a perfect player, but he can get the job done against nearly any player. According to film work by Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star last season, Asamoah faced off against Houston’s J.J. Watt 13 times when the Chiefs played the Texans. Paylor’s accounting of the game had Asamoah at 12 positive “encounters” and one negative, pretty impressive stats against a perennial All-Pro.
Here’s one of those plays, and notice how Asamoah (No. 73) sticks with Watt and his moves to hold him off:
If that’s not enough, check out this clip from YouTube of Asamoah blocking future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis completely out of the play.
