In past seasons under head coach Mike Smith, Falcons defenses have been able to overcome some off their deficiencies by forcing turnovers. Like many things that are different this season, that too has changed.
This year the Falcons defense ranks tied for 30th with eight turnovers. Last season they finished the year tied for fifth with 31.
Safety Thomas DeCoud said as a unit, they don’t have a reason for the drop in turnovers this year, but they know they’ve got to be more confident in going after — and getting — turnovers.
“We’ve got to get more confidence while the ball is in the air and going up and trying to make plays and get that mindset that the ball is ours when it’s in the air,” DeCoud said.
Rookie Robert Alford leads the team this season with two interceptions while four others are tied with one.
